Hating the unfairness of her mother’s situation, Hannah questions how God could let this happen. Hannah wants to be both kind and good, but uncertainty about the future fills her with despair. Impulsive and daring, Hannah becomes involved in several “escapades” and persuades her best friend Ellie to participate as well. Forced to face the consequences of her behavior, Hannah not only finds her “real” self, but finally discovers a source of courage she didn’t know she possessed.

I feel just like saying the “d” word—but I know better. The last time Glad heard me say “damn,” she made me copy Ephesians 5:4 fifty times in what she calls my “discipline notebook.” That book is getting pretty full. I stay in trouble more than you can imagine. The guidance counselor at the junior high told Glad that I’m just “acting out.” Mrs. Inge said, “Hannah is highly intelligent, but she has issues that she must resolve.”

 … Glad has grounded me until she gets a note from Mrs. Inge telling her that my conduct at school is much improved. Not only that, Glad is making me write a three-page essay on Proverbs 14:29 and no television until I get it finished.

 … I haven’t always been this way. The truth is I think I must be mad at God. After all, He is letting my mother die—my mother who’s so good and kind and hardworking, my mother who is only thirty-six years old, my mother who ought to be up and about and enjoying life instead of lying on a couch dying. I’d just like to talk to God face to face about this. I’d like an answer. I’d like for Him to look me in the eye and say this is right because I would look at Him right back and say, “No, Sir, it’s not.”
